How Can We Survive the Economic Crisis during the Pandemic?

by: Miftah Yusroni

Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) is a virus that originated in Wuhan, China. This virus can enter the body through the mouth, nose, and eyes because these organs can transfer the virus to the lungs. People unconsciously often touch these 3 organs. Therefore, social and physical distancing is enforced to prevent the spread of this virus. Using a mask and hand sanitizer is also important to prevent transmission of the virus. Local governments also began to make policies such as sterilization posts to minimize outbreaks of the virus in the community.

Work from home policy is a policy taken by the government. For some people, their work will not be affected such as students, teachers, office workers, and many more. Even some people feel facilitated by this policy, how not? People who previously had to travel long distances to work and study, now only have to stay at home to do their job. However, for other people, this policy is very influential in their economy, especially for people who rely on direct contact with customers, such as online motorcycle taxis and traders. For them, this policy created a crisis for its economy. So, how people survive the economic crisis during the pandemic?

One of the ways to survive the economic crisis is by helping one another. People who can get income by staying at home should help people whose income is reduced because of a pandemic. One of them is influencer and YouTuber. They even got benefit from a pandemic because the exchange rate of the currency against the dollar goes up and they are paid in dollars, not rupiah. Many influencers have donated their salaries and raised funds to help to fight COVID-19. There was one influencer that caught my attention, named Baim Wong. He did not donate his money to medical personnel, but instead, he produced masks massively to be distributed to the public. Baim Wong believes that besides helping medical personnel to treat patients, it is also important to prevent the spread of the virus. Another way is the government makes new policies to ease the burden on the people. On April 1 President Joko Widodo issued a policy to deal with the COVID-19 outbreaks. Five policies have been issued, including electricity cost relief for PLN consumers with 450 and 900 VA power for 3 months, PSBB policy, the prohibition of going home, credit relief for fishermen and taxi drivers, and the addition of the state budget in the health sector.

We can get through this pandemic together by helping one another. We must realize that there are still many people who need to work in the middle of a pandemic for their daily needs. They understand the dangers of the virus but they don't have another way to support their families. Influencers, public figures, and the government are people who can help in the middle of a pandemic through fundraising and policies. We can also help the economic crisis by reminding one another about the importance of personal hygiene. Indeed, funds are needed to help medical personnel, but helping the economic crisis not only contributes funds or other assistance. By staying at home is already helpful, because by preventing the spread of the virus, we also help the country's economy not to spend more funds in the health sector.
